10 Things I Learned About Earrings

Men Earrings Fashion Style Tips

I stopped wearing earrings just about the time when I decided that I wanted a more mature, clean and less-things-going-on look (if you don’t already know, I’m getting closer to 30.)

Not to say wearing earrings is something less than being mature, but staying chic and tasteful while wearing it gets trickier as a man ages.

Same Feet, Different Size

Feet Different Size Men

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed it yourself, but a person can actually have different sized feet.

I just received my pair of espadrilles from RopeySoles.com today. After trying it out, got confused and tried my other shoes (and the cycle went on for a few rounds), I was surprised to realise the fact that I have different sized feet, and that 60% of human population share the same problem.

Style Inspiration: Camouflage

Men Camouflage Fashion Style Trend

It feels sort of cliché to mention about camouflage again now, but I’ve never actually dedicate a post to it. As posted on instagram recently (note: new kid on the block #follow), it’s camo-overloaded (in a good way, if you will) in Givenchy Pre-Spring/Summer 2014 menswear collection. It’s a sign that camouflage will still be a strong element in next year.

When it comes to trend and purchasing trendy items, my natural instinct always speaks to me: Would I still be wearing this after 1 year?

Man vs Purse & Clutch

Men Purse Trend

The word “purse” and “clutch” have always been associated with women since time immemorial, and so to many men, the idea of carrying them might be a little daunting.

In fact, man purse / man clutch (if they sound too feminine, there’s “murse” (man + purse), folio, gear bag, sleeve etc ahem) exists, and they are made specially for men. They are both stylish and useful. I bought one recently (picture) and it actually solved some of my problems.

Style Inspiration: Monk Strap

Monk Strap Shoes Malaysia

The first lesson I learned about men’s shoes was the unfortunate fate of square-toed shoes. (It was the day my dark brown square-toed sentenced to an eternity of imprisonment in my rack.)

The second lesson I learned was that there’s actually a big universe inside this subset of menswear world: there are brogues, chelsea boots, oxford, wingtips, espadrilles, loafers, slip-on, boots… and the names keep on going, with each style comes with own history and craft that I have not even known and gone into (even until now.)

Fashion News, Thoughts & Insights

Hello, Nuffnang Fashion Fabulous

Nuffnang Fashion Fabulous

As a menswear blogger living in the female-dominated fashion blogosphere in Malaysia, I was thrilled when Nuffnang decided to bring me into their newborn Fashion Fabulous group.

Fashion Fabulous is an exclusive community of Malaysian fashion bloggers. When I was browsing through the members list and checking out the members’ blogs, I thought to myself:

How many fashion bloggers are there in Malaysia?

I had no idea. But that led to the next and much more interesting thought:

Time Travel

Menswear Fashion History Time Travel

Portrait of Prospero Alessandri, by painter Giovanni Battista Moroni, 1560

This might sound silly, but when I was putting on my new favourite white jeans and my old trusty blazer days ago, some random questions came up and stuck in my head:

  • When did we (men) actually start wearing the pants, blazer, shirts, suit & tie and etc?
  • Why are we wearing what we’re wearing today?
  • Will skirts for men eventually become mainstream (re-imagine the first sentence but replace “white jeans” with “white skirt”) in another 20 years?

Well, the last question is pretty much still an unknown, but to satisfy curiosity coming from the first two questions, I’ve been collecting snippets of related images. When I reorganised them into a more meaning manner, it sort of turned into a mini “time travelling” experience, and that explains the title of this post.

Style Inspiration: Paisley

The Paisley Fashion Trend

Seeing paisley pattern always brings back my childhood nostalgia. As a small child near the end of 80′s, I remember seeing piles of paisley fabric beside my mother’s vintage Singer® sewing machine (she’s a casual dressmaker back then.)

Paisley was everywhere from dress shirts to our sofa cushion covers, and I’m not sure if it’s a trend or just her sartorial favourite during that period. This early encounter with paisley left me with the impression that paisley is very vintage, kind of old and matured.

William Baldwin for Sacoor Brothers Spring/Summer 2013

William Baldwin for Sacoor Brother, Spring/Summer 2013

Remember William Baldwin for Sacoor Brothers last year?

Well this year, Mr Baldwin worked with Sacoor Brothers again, by starring in Sacoor Brothers Spring/Summer 2013 collection lookbook.

The collection was inspired by “Tennis” game, as well as this very chic pastel color palette:

Zakwan Anuar FW 2013/2014 & Debut Menswear

Zakwan Anuar Malaysian Designer

They say “Womenswear designers pool is over-saturated.” So what would happen when womenswear designers start designing for men?

That’s probably a very layman question and possibly irrelevant in 2013, where menswear are adopting trends from womenswear more than ever. It became an anticipation when I received the invitation to Zakwan Anuar Fall/Winter 2013/2014 show at KLPac yesterday. During the show, he debuted a few looks for men.
